  2. Sun's Nov 2, 1992 Announcement: "Right boxes for rightsizing"

  5. HP and Sun announced products aimed at two different targets with
  6. some overlap.
  7.  
  8. Sun announced 2 low end workstations, one high end server, and a new
  9. integration services organization. All are aimed at the rightsizing
  10. market (mostly commercial).
  11.  
  12. HP announced the 2nd generation of the Series 700 with new graphics
  13. and 'MPower', the person-to-person multimedia communication tool.
  14. These products are aimed at the technical and commercial workstation
  15. market and high end PC market.

  18. SPARCclassic:    low cost, 15" color desktop workstation

  34.                          executing rightsizing transformations. Will
  35.                          act as a project manager or prime contractor
  36.                          by selecting integrators/technology partners

  38. ANNOUNCEMENT HIGHLIGHTS:
  39. "These new systems are neither fish nor fowl", states Bob Weinberger
  40. "as a PC replacement they're too expensive, and as a workstation
  41. they have been compromised."

  43. SPARCstation LX
  44. ----------------
  45. Sun turns up its nose at technical users! McNealy no longer wants to
  46. talk in technical terms and use product benchmarks that technical
  47. buyers have relied upon for years when comparing hardware platforms!
  48.  
  49. Sun announced the SPARCstation LX, a low cost 2D color workstation
  50. for the technical workstation user that replaces the IPX at a lower
  51. price point, increases performance by a whopping 8% (SPECint92)
  52. and is slightly LESS in SPECfp92! No wonder they don't want to use
  53. benchmarks!

  55. Sun limited the SPARCstation LX on expandability and useability.
  56. The max RAM is 96MB, and has no upgrade path to a higher performing
  57. system. They incorporated the GX plus graphics (2D accelerator)
  58. as standard and it's still only half of HP's 715/33 base graphics
  59. in vector performance. And HP 715/33 X perf is 3 times that of the
  60. SPARCstation LX. This system has been COMPROMISED!  No wonder
  61. they don't want to use benchmarks!

  63. So they designed a workstation for technical users that has a low
  64. price point, lacks performance and investment protection, and forces
  65. them to Solaris 2.1. Most of Sun's technical users are still on
  66. Solaris 1.1. Those that have begun the migration to 2.0 have been
  67. highly disatisfied with the quality of the release. A Sun official
  68. has even admitted that there are 1000 bugs in 2.0! Would you trust
  69. your MISSION CRITICAL project with this OS? Sun users that need a
  70. real workstation are left with the SPARC10 which isn't shipping in
  71. volume, has sluggish single CPU performance, and requires multiple
  72. CPUs to catch up to HP's single processor systems. SUN TECHNICAL
  73. CUSTOMERS BEWARE! Sun is pointing their ONE arrow in a different
  74. direction, where will that leave you?

  76. SPARCclassic
  77. --------------
  78. "Sun has pulled a bait and switch with the Classic and it's
  79. non-discountable pricing" adds Weinberger. "Sun's corporate customers
  80. are not going to stand for this."

  82. The SPARCclassic is targeted at the commercial PC market and offers
  83. 486 performance at much higher prices - good aim Scott! (486/50 =
  84. SPECint92: 30.1, SPECfp92: 14, with street prices that are about
  85. 1/3 to 1/2 the price). The Classic is intended to be a low cost
  86. color client yet lacks the floating point advantage that comes from
  87. a workstation and it's not upgradeable.

  89. It also lacks applications - only 860 are expected to be ported
  90. to Solaris 2.1 later in 1993, and who knows how many of them will
  91. be PC type applications.

  93. HP's MPower Advantage!

  95. Sun offers multimedia products, but HP offers a person-to-person
  96. communication environment with all the parts integrated and packaged
  97. in one product that users can get from one vendor. Sun's multi-
  98. media solutions come from different 3rd party vendors, are sold
  99. separately and they don't have Shared X.

  153. Sun Knock-offs:
  154. - Low price point of $4295 is NON-DISCOUNTABLE. HP 715/33 at $5695
  155.   with a 22% discount is $4442
  156. - $3995 price point requires purchase of 12 systems
  157. - Solaris 2.1 requires 250MB of disk space to load complete OS.
  158.   207MB disk cannot hold entire OS and when parts of it are loaded,
  159.   there's very little swap space
  160. - Price difference between 15" color and 16" color is $3700!  (All
  161.   those corporate discounts went into lowering the price)
  162. - HP offers 2x RAM capacity
  163. - HP offers 3x Disk capacity
  164. - Don't forget the 715/50 has much better performance if these
  165.   systems won't do. It costs $5k less and outperforms a SPARCstation
  166.   10:30 which would be Sun's answer to more performance.

  171. - New XDBus(central system bus) with 500MB/s sustainable transfer rate
  172. - Capable of doing 8-way in April 1993; 16-way in second half of 1993
  173.   and 20-way in first half on 1994
  174. - Low entry system price: $95,000 for a 2-way system with 64MB of
  175.   memory, 4.2 GB of hard disk and one 4-slot I/O channel
  176. - Cost to add 2 CPUs: $20,000
  177. - Performance: approximately 500 TPS and 1631 job/min AIM III at 8-way
  178. - Automatic system reconfiguration around failed components
  179. - Performance growth through additional processors and future higher
  180.   clock speed SuperSPARC chip
  181. - SunService 2000: 24 hours/day, 7 days/week support with 2-hour
  182.   response and 15 days of tailored training
  183. - System integration Service where Sun can either prime the entire

  198. Analysis:
  199. (1) Sun wants to establishes itself as a viable vendor in the
  200. commercial market. Even though the first customer shipment is 6 months
  201. out, Sun nevertheless introduced the SPARCCenter 2000 in hope of
  202. participating in the already booming rightsizing market.
  203. (2) To gain quick recognition in the commercial market, Sun used price
  204. as the major attraction. They made sure this message cam out loud and
  205. clear during the announcement.
  206. (3) Performance of SPARCCenter merely matches what HP can deliver today
  207. on the 887/890 and 890 family. In fact, industry analysts like IDC and
  208. InfoCorp quickly pointed out that problem. HP will leapfrog Sun by the
  209. time Sun reaches phase 1.
  210. (4) The successful delivery of the SPARCCenter depends on many things.
  211. The 40 MHz chip has to be there. The Solaris 2.2 needs to be available
  212. and optimized for SPARCCenter. The third party software needs to be
  213. there for potential customers to do actual work. Any customer who is
  214. looking seriously at rightsizing can not take Sun seriously.
  215. (5) Due to the poor MP performance of 600MP line, Sun had adviced its
  216. sales force to stay away from mission-critical applications. That
  217. means Sun has no reference site!
  218. (6) IDC also quickly pointed out price is not the only thing commercial
  219. customer looks for. Marketing, sales and support all need to be lined
  220. up to meet customer's requirement. Sun will to have retrain its sales
  221. force to think differently as Sun has traditionally relies on third
  222. parties's support  and very technical selling.
  223. (7) The phased implementation shows Sun is still learning the art of
  224. optimizing SMP performance. Sun readily admits that they are just
  225. getting started on that.
  226. (8) The fact that only 40 MHz chip was mentioned throughout the
  227. announcement shows Sun is really having problem increase the clock
  228. speed of SuperSPARC.
  229. (9) SPARCCenter 2000 can automatic reconfigure itself around failed
  230. component. HP 890 can diagnoses itself before actual component
  231. failure. Prevention is better than medicine.
  232. (10) Sun still lacks high availability features like CPU switchover.
  233. There is also no performance tuning tool. Neither is B1 security.
